The one about horror stories
28th of October ‘24
Looking for a job can be scary
Greetings my dear,
It’s the last week of October, so I have to get all the spooooookyness out of my system. As a person, I’m the type that rolls with the punches so overall nothing really phases me. But in the past year, I’ve had quite a few recruitment horror stories of my own.
The first one that comes to mind was last May. I interviewed for a marketing position at a huge company with offices all over the world. There, I was asked not once - but twice!! whether I have any kids or I plan to have any in the future. NOW, in case you don’t know, this is super illegal! Even though I pointed out how out of line and illegal that question is, I was invited to the following stage, and a different person asked once again. Oh, how I love being a woman!
The second one is a little milder, everything legal but still oddly unprofessional. I applied to a fintech startup, and I was super excited because startups are the place to be for me. Once I got to the last phase, I found out that the meeting wasn’t with anyone at the company. It was with a friend of the founder who happened to be in marketing herself. It was a super-odd experience that felt more like a school test than a job interview. (I didn’t get an offer :D)
Do you know what’s the scariest thing of all? That I have a million more stories but they are so common no one is shocked anymore!

💡Always keep in mind…
Report, report, report
Now, I know it goes without saying. If something messed up and illegal happens to you you should talk with someone about it and make sure you’re safe and it doesn’t happen again. When those things are work-related, you should rely on your union. They will provide free legal advice and if needed representation as well.
You’re not part of a union yet? Wtf…what are you waiting for!
🍃Have you…
📚 Read: Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind I’m back with an old book but a goldie. And it’s disturbing and unsettling 😇 A perfect rec for Halloween week but not an obvious one. Perfume follows Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, a man with a freakishly sharp sense of smell but no personal scent. Set in 18th-century France, it’s a dark tale of his obsession with capturing the perfect fragrance, which he believes can control people. To get it, he starts murdering young women, hoping their scents will help him craft his ultimate perfume. It’s a twisted story of obsession, identity, and desire for power. |
