The one about career gaps
4th of November ‘24
I know what you did last summer
Hello hello!
Are you lucky enough to have worked non-stop from the get-go or are you one of the many that for a reason or the other has gaps here and there where there was no job to do?
Having a gap in your resume is super common, either because you were shortly between jobs, you had a baby, moved countries, or simply because life doesn’t always go the way you want it to. Being asked to justify those times is quite common, and when you have been laid off for a while it gets harder and harder to have anything good to say.
In my opinion, you should never have to justify yourself. The only thing that should matter during an interview should be the work you’ve actually done. It still happens though.
My tip to you is to do still all the little things you can, work on a passion project, volunteer, learn a new skill. That way, you have something to say about the time you’ve spent not “formally” working!

Work experience is a mindset
You don’t have to have been paid for something to count as work experience. If you were part of a research team during your PhD, you have experience with project management even though your title wasn’t project management. If you worked at a warehouse you have experience with asset management and logistics. All skills are transferable, you just have to give yourself more credit.
🍃Have you…
📞 Listen: All Points North by Yle News One of the suckiest parts about not being a Finn is the limited access to local news. I enjoy listening to All Points North’s weekly breakdowns of what’s happening in Finland and the deep dives on some hard-hitting topics. It’s a nice podcast, not too long and not too short, that will make you feel like you’re part of the discussions once again! |
